We are looking for a Head of Engineering for Gusto Embedded Payroll (GEP) to lead the development of our embedded API products. You will manage a team of engineers and work with Product Management, Design, Data, and Technical Solutions to build scalable solutions for our customers. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, startup-like environment. You will be empowered by the GM of Gusto Embedded Payroll and will play a key leadership role within Gusto.
As Head of Engineering, you will:
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering their growth and development.
- Drive the technical strategy and execution for Gusto's embedded payroll product.
- Solve complex technical challenges with a customer-centric approach.
- Implement engineering best practices to increase velocity and quality.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners.
- Influence API architectural specifications across Gusto.
We're looking for someone with:
- 10-15+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior leadership.
- Experience developing enterprise SaaS products.
- Experience in high-growth startup environments.
- Experience building and scaling developer-focused products and APIs.
- Proven leadership of engineering teams with 20+ members.
- Expertise in evolving early-stage products into scalable solutions.
- Architectural expertise and business acumen.
- Customer-first mindset.
- Strong communication skills.

The cash compensation for this role is targeted at $222,000-$256,000 /yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $261,000-$299,000 /yr for San Francisco & New York. The final offer depends on experience and expertise.
